ABSTRACT

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby’s life is essential for improving the health of both mother and child. The success of exclusive breastfeeding is influenced not only by maternal factors but also by the surrounding environment, particularly family support. Strong family support—whether emotional, instrumental, informational, or appraisal support—can enhance a mother’s motivation to breastfeed and reduce barriers during the breastfeeding process.
Objective: To describe the level of family support for exclusive breastfeeding among mothers with infants aged 0–6 months.
Method: This study used a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 0–6 months, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire covering four aspects of family support: emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal. Data were analyzed univariately and presented in frequency distribution tables and percentages.
Results: The study found that most families provided good support for exclusive breastfeeding. Emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal support were all categorized as good, with the majority of respondents falling into the high-support category. However, a small proportion of families showed lower levels of support in the instrumental and informational aspects.
Conclusion: The majority of families provided good support for mothers in exclusive breastfeeding. Family support plays an important role in the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Increasing education and awareness among families is expected to further strengthen exclusive breastfeeding practices.
